Wave landscape by Cuba Gallery - www.cubagallery.co.nz

The Nintendo DS has been popular ever since it first came out, selling millions world wide. The games are great and very inexpensive, can play Gameboy Advanced (GBA) games, non-arguably the top feature is built-in wireless WiFi. Able to connect to surrounding DS's and to the Internet to give it the versatility to be one of the best handhelds.

Many people argue that the PSP is superior to the DS in every way. I'm not here to put down any other system, or to rank the DS, nor am I here to comment on any other system (that will come in later posts). This is just a guide to getting the most out of your DS.

If your reading this post, then probably you've either got a DS and have never heard of homebrew, or turning your DS into a 'Multi-tasking-super-wonder-of-the-gaming-world', or you have heard about it, but just don't know the do's and don'ts, or just how to get started. Or you don't have a DS and are thinking about getting one, just searching for a reason to shell out that 129 bucks (then some more for games). I'm not typing this to get you to buy any thing, or to quit using any thing, just trying to keep you informed so you can make the decision.

Overview
Many, DS users and non-DS users alike, are fully aware of “HomeBrew”, but several do not know exactly what are how to use them. While others are using them every day, and still others know nothing about them. They still use their DS's for nothing but games, and Pictochat. While I can't resist Pictochat in a random restaurant, or just opening up the DS to download a mini game from some person in the arcade to go head-to-head in an all out battle to obtain dominance in the gamming world, I still can't pass the opportunity to use my DS to do all my other meaningless tasks. Every thing from PDA (keeping track of my notes, to-do lists, phone #'s, etc…), to surfing the Internet (yes, on the DS), listening to my favorite radio station (sure, I can get a pen with radio built in, but why carry an extra device?), or even watch movies.

Basic Need-To-Know
Some things to keep in your head start with homebrew. HomeBrew is a term to describe programs that wasn't made by a company to be mass produced and sold to the public. For example, a game that some one wrote for fun, or for a learning experience and hands it out to others for either their enjoyment, or their feedback. HomeBrew can range from games, to programs, to operating systems for computers. I'm not sure why, but the term 'HomeBrew' has been reserved for games and gaming systems in most areas, even tho the same principle is applied to many other things. HomeBrew has been around for many many years and has had a huge spike when the Nintendo DS appeared on the screen. While GBA was out, people all over the world wrote homebrew games and applications that were distrubuted across the Internet, and now those homebrew are transported to the DS with little to no alterations. In order to get those and any other homebrew to function on your DS, you'll need a few items. An adapter that can accept some type of memory stick, or one that has the memory built in, access to a computer, and access to the homebrew, or the Internet to download any of the hundreds upon hundreds of homebrew available. Slot 1 is the DS game slot on top of your DS, with slot 2 being the GBA slot on the bottom. A Pass Card is a slot 1 device that tells the handhold how to read the adapter in slot 2. The adapter is the device that holds the memory. The memory is the memory that holds the homebrew. SD memory sticks are the sticks of memory that are normally used for mobile phones, cameras, and most PDA's. They range from 64 MBs to 2GB's, in 3 different sizes. Normal SD has been around the longest, and more common; Mini SD was the next generation being smaller and faster; Micro SD are the newest being less than half the size of the Normal, and quite a be faster. There are also adapters to fit Micros into Mini's and/or Normals, and adapters for Mini's into Normals. A card reader is just that, a device to read a memory card (like the SD's) to a computer. Either via USB, Fire wire, or an internal card added, or built in. Several all-in-one printers come with a card reader built in.

— GETTING STARTED —

Hardware
HomeBrew is possible due to a device called an adapter. An adapter is just the holder of the memory that is able to plug into your gaming system. There are several types of adapters:

Slot 1: An adapter that fits into the top slot of your DS. It does leave your bottom slot open for other devices, such as extra ram, or a rumble pack, but you have to purchase those separately, meaning more money to shell out. Of all the slot 1 adapters out there, only 2 are worth getting as of this posting. The G6 comes with up to 512 MB built on memory. More memory cannot be added, but they have some of the best software you can find, and the best compatibility with the homebrew that can be put on there. The M3 uses either Compact Flash memory (which is slow and large, not worth getting), or the SD cards. The SD cards can range from 64 MB, to 4 GB giving you a choice of space and/or price that best fits your situation. The SD cards can also be used mobile phones, cameras, and most PDA's making them versatile. The only penalty of slot 1 adapters are the fact that to run the Internet browser you have to purchase a ram pack for the GBA slot.

Slot 2: An adapter that fits into the bottom slot of your DS or into any GBA. Cannot add a rumble pack (but some Slot 2 adapters come with one built in), has built in ram, but you have to have some type of pass card in slot one. Increases the money you have to pay, but the ram being built in allows you to run the web browser programs which you can't do on slot 1 adapters. You can choose between an adapter that has memory built on, or a card that accepts memory sticks (see Slot 1 description). The only penalty is that Slot 2 adapters must use a pass card (see Basic Need-to-Know description), but make up for it if you plan to use the web browser. The only adapters worth looking at for slot 2 (at the time of this typing) are the M3, and the SuperCard which both types uses SD memory sticks.

Instruction
Any adapter you get will come with a disc of software and information of how to use it. So I wont go into deep detail, just a basic sum-them-up type of thing. Plug the memory part of your adapter to the computer, drag-and-drop a few files from the CD to the device. Drag-and-drop your choice of homebrew making sure the homebrew is a .nds file (a pure file as it is referred to). Unplug the memory part and plug it up to your DS, turn the power on, start your homebrew like a normal game, and enjoy. That's it! That's all there is to using it to it's fullest potential. The programs that come on the disc are upgradable, meaning you can go to their website and download the latest and greatest, then use that instead of the software on the disc. There are some files out there that require to be patched. Usually the adapter will come with that software on the disc. Just open the software, choose the file that has to be patched, and click start or patch. A few seconds later and you have a .nds file. Again, your adapter will come with the instructions.

HomeBrew
There are several different types of homebrew running around. The majority of them are made by gamers/programmers who just do it for fun, or because they want that piece of software for the DS. There are homebrew out there that are illegal, and I'm not going to support them. Nintendo has created and licensed hundreds of games for the DS, which any copy of those games you use with out their permission (usually purchasing the product with a receipt) is illegal. With that said, I use those illegal copies all the time …. kinda. I like to download a game and play it before I buy it. Let's face it, a lot of games are not worth buying, and with out testing them, the only two ways to know which ones are worth it, are to watch videos of someone playing it, and/or to play it yourself. So I download a game, and play it for demo purposes. If I like the game, I'll pick up a legal copy, if I don't, then I don't. There are still hundreds of perfectly legal games out and a bout that are much more interesting, and useful than the games. Personally I have DSLinux installed on mine. A perfectly legal, and free homebrew that puts a linux operating system on my handhold, allowing me to do most things I can do on a laptop with out carrying around a six pound case that is just awkward to use while walking. Don't get me wrong, the DS isn't for every situation, but neither is the laptop. The laptop is just that, a 'lap'top, while the DS is just a very quick boot up, use, put away type of device. I think I got off subject …….. yup … I'm off subject, let's continue with homebrew!

If you like Macintosh (I know I do), then the MiniVMac might interest you. A homebrew that puts Mac 7.5 OS onto the DS. I'm not sure if it's legal or not, but I doubt Macintosh cares, since it is 7.5, and Mac is coming out 10.5 (I think) for normal computers shortly. DSOrganize is another homebrew turning your DS into a PDA with touch screen and every thing! Several drawing homebrew are about, imagine a touch screen paint brush pro! A program for Voice over IP, allowing you to use your DS as a telephone to other DS's that are connected to WiFi. Several chat homebrew including AIM, MSN, IRC and others. One of my favorites is DSBasic, programming in Basic on your DS while on the move, then connect it to your PC, and keep working, or complie and run! There are just to many to list here, but they range from the tiniest of programs like a demo of a 3d ball, to VNC software allowing your DS to take control of your home/office computer and controlling it as if you were sitting at your computer. Best thing to do is go to google and type in DS HomeBrew.

Ending
Well, I guess I lied to you. This wasn't much of a guide at all, just a lot of my ramblings clumped together with no real direction. Basically to get your DS a powerhouse, just get some type of memory adapter (google m3, or SuperCard), then put homebrew of your choice on there, and your set to go. If it is an adapter that fits into slot 2, make sure you get a slot one passkey type of device. If it requires, you'll need a memory stick. If it requires a memory stick, you'll need a reader (most packages come with a USB card reader. The homebrew can be downloaded from all over the Internet, again just google DS homebrew, or DS download. Read some forums and they will tell you all about their preferences, and how to get the software etc…

London Cardinal Place :: “The real voyage of discovery consists not in seeking new landscapes but in having new eyes.” ~ by davidgutierrez photography

Syracuse University is a private college located in Syracuse, New York. I attended hoping to graduate with a degree in Hospitality Management. Due to the high cost, tuition alone runs over $30,000 a year, I only attended for a short time before seeking a less expensive option. However, if you can afford it SU is a great college that offers a lot of opportunities for its students. With over 200 majors to choose from this school offers a diversity of opportunities both in and out of the classroom.

A good place to meet other incoming students is through the college orientation. Whether you are an incoming freshmen or a transfer student, SU, organizes a two to three day orientation for new students. Consider moving in a day or two early. This gives you a chance to get your room set up and meet others who have moved in early as well. This is great time to meet people because you are all on the same level playing field; your new, scared, and excited all at the same time.

Syracuse University offers over 300 student organizations. These organizations are a great way to meet people that have the same common interest as you. Another good place to meet fellow students is the classroom; after all you are together for an entire semester. Other popular places to meet students are the library, dorm living, parties, and through friends.

All incoming freshmen are required to have one of three dining plans. This adds to both the cost of room and board and to the possibility of you gaining the freshmen 15! There are many dining halls around campus and each offers a wide selection of food. However, the food for the most part is not that appetizing. The only good thing about the dining plan is when you have friends visit they can use a guest pass. It is a cheap way to feed everyone that is on a tight budget.

The saving grace when it comes to food is your SuperCard Food account which is a declining-balance card that is linked to your Syracuse I.D. Card. You can use this card at most vending machines, Kimmel Food Court, and a few off site locations (think along the lines of pizza). Kimmel Food Court which serves KFC, Burger King, Dunkin Donuts among other things is a popular place for many students; especially on weekends when it is open until 3am. On South campus, Goldstein Dining, offers many options; Dunkin Donuts, Burger King, and Sbarro to name a few. My off campus favorite was Dinosaur Bar-B-Q, but you would need a car to get there. It is a great place to grab wings and enjoy some live music.

Freshmen are not permitted to have a car on campus unless you obtain special permission. You need to petition for it and prove that there is a valid reason you need to have one (medical reason). The cost to park your car on campus can cost anywhere between $400 and $700 a year. Now the campus is big, at 200 acres, so sometimes it is hard to get around. Buses run frequently so do plan accordingly. The two worst things in my opinion about Syracuse University (with the exception of the cost) actually have nothing to do with the university itself.

The weather is a big con. It is windy, it is cold, and the snowflakes are not like the big beautiful ones you see in the movies. Slush, ice, and sleet make up the picture of winter in Syracuse. To top it off winter lasts for months. Some days it is so cold out that you do not even want to venture outside.

The second worse thing is the safety outside of campus. On campus there are a lot of procedures implemented to ensure your safety, but right out of your little zone is the city of Syracuse. Syracuse is not known for being the safest place. If you do venture out I would always do so with a group.

I really enjoyed Brewster and Boland dorms because they were newly renovated. The downside to them though is they are the furthest away from all the academic buildings. When choosing a dorm you have to decide what means more to you; close proximity to everything or a better lay out of the actual dorm room. Remember just because you put in for a certain dorm does not guarantee you will receive your request. Another thing I really liked about the dorms at Syracuse were that some of them offered a “split double.” This is where you share a room with a roommate but unlike in traditional rooms there is a half wall that divides the room into two halves. You have the best of both worlds; you get to share with a roommate and you still have your own privacy. Another thing that I found quite surprising about the dorm situation here was the guy-girl rooming. Most colleges have separate wings or floors for those of the opposite sex, but here at Syracuse University you will see that co-ed by alternating rooms is common. One room will be female and the next male.

Even if you are not into sports you need to know who Otto is. Otto the Orange is the mascot at SU. Athletics is a big part of the culture on campus. The Carrier Dome, that sits right on the edge of campus, is where a lot of the sporting events are held. The men's basketball team in 2003 won the National Championship title.

Here are a few other things that you should know about Syracuse University. Your student ID card is not only good for identification purposes and for food purchasing. Many freshmen take classes in lecture halls. You use your card to swipe in because of the vast amount of students. Therefore, if you want to be counted as there for attendance purposes, make sure you have your card with you. Another thing is you can have a Supercard Plus account balance on your card. This allows you to use your ID card to do laundry, use the campus copy centers, and purchase student discounted tickets at the Carrier Dome. IDs are also needed to gain access to many of the dorms at night. Residential Security, RSAs, sit at the entrance to every dorm on campus from 8pm until 8am checking IDs for security purposes.

When the weather is actually nice, hurry and get outside. “The Quad” is an area of grass located in the middle of the SU campus. Here you will find many students hanging out enjoying the nice weather. Bring a blanket and book, bring a ball for catch, or bring a Frisbee for some fun. The Syracuse Campus has a lot to offer, but if you feel like you need to get away for the day that can be easily accommodated. Marshall Street (also known as M-Street to many students), is located right next to campus. Here you can go and escape campus life for awhile. There are lots of good places to eat, shop, and at night the street comes alive with local bars. If you wanted to venture a little further away from campus take a bus over to Carousel Center to catch a movie or do some shopping. If you wanted to get away for the evening than head to Turning Stone Casino. Turning Stone is about 30 minutes away and offers food, gambling, and that much needed break from school work.

I bought my son the Dingoo 4GB PSP game console with MP3/MP4 player for his birthday a few months ago and so far everything has been going accordingly. The reason I bought the Dingoo 4GB PSP game console with MP3/MP4 player was because my son wanted a psp but he wanted an MP3 player as well. I wasn't going to buy two separate gadgets, so I went ahead and bought a 2 in 1 instead.

What I liked about the Dingoo 4GB PSP game console with MP3/MP4 player

One of the things I liked about the Dingoo 4GB PSP game console with MP3/MP4 player is that it allows my son to play music as well as play games, all at the same time. It comes with a rechargeable battery and it's easy to carry around. It's really light weight which is a plus because it makes traveling with it less of a hassle.

Another thing I like about the Dingoo 4GB PSP game console with MP3/MP4 player is that the LCD that comes on it is great in quality. Everything that is shown on this MP3 player is sharp, clear and has just the right brightness.

Not only does this MP3 player play MP3s but it plays MP4s as well. Even though my son has no idea what this is, it really doesn't matter. I'm just glad that he has the option to upload them whenever he does learn about MP4s.

Thirdly, it comes with a 4GB memory card which is way more than enough room for my son to download music. He can also upload different games whenever he gets bored with the ones he already have.

I personally like the text to speech e-book reader because I can use it every once in a while whenever my son isn't playing his games. It's pretty fast and it can store just about any e-book you choose to download.

My son is infatuated with the video player that comes on the Mp3/MP4 player as well. I actually didn't know that it was capable of playing videos but once I found out, I realized that I made a pretty great purchase.

My conclusion?

For only $85, I got my son a great MP3/MP4 player that not only plays music but it comes with games, an e-book reader and a video player. I think that it's a great little gadget for the price and plus it works just as well as a real iPod or PSP.

Palm Beach Supercar Weekend 2009 by ZKcrew

MySpace may be as much of a place for spam and identity theft as it is a place for friends and networking.

The online site, which receives 38.7 billion page views (even more than Yahoo!) according to ComScore Media Metrix, also is in danger of becoming a war zone when it comes to spammers and other people preying on unsuspecting MySpace users willing to give out too much personal information.

Media company News Corp., which bought MySpace last year for $580 million will have to deal with these security issues head on as the problems only continue to increase and the identity thieves only get smarter in their approaches towards users.

The company has already created a Content Assurance Team. Employees on this team post fake profiles on MySpace and then wait for the thieves or spammers to come to them.

In addition, the company also has plans to roll out a massive education campaign for MySpace users to ensure that people are being safe while online.

In the typical attempts to infect PCs with a virus, a spammer may post a fake profile where anyone interested in looking at the pictures must download something. Of course, the program that they download goes on to infect their computer with a virus. In other cases, someone may receive a message from one of their assumed “friends” who asks for information such as passwords and other personal information.

It is no secret that MySpace can be a dangerous place for people who are too trusting of their virtual friends. This is why it is smart to follow some of these common sense tips to make sure that you always have the upper hand when it comes to your Internet usage.

First, never give out personal information such as passwords or other sorts of key pieces to your login information. If you suspect that during a conversation or series of messages to someone on MySpace that you may have given away too much information, change your password immediately.

Second, do not download something unless you know who it is from. If you are required to download some sort of software in order to view certain material on MySpace, you do so at your own risk if you do not know the individual very well. Downloads from people you do not know always carries a risk of infecting your computer system, and if you do this on a work computer, you can be sure that your status at that job site will most likely be immediate termination.

Another tip that many suggest is hiding your profile from anyone unless you give them authorization to view your MySpace page. Although, this in some ways defeats the original intents and purposes of MySpace in the beginning, it is already a different, virtual world from when MySpace started only a few years ago. The thieves' technology and scams just keep getting better.

300 Sensors on a Formula One Car

The latest McLaren Formula One car, as driven by current world champion Jenson Button, relies on feedback during the race from 300 data streams – via miniaturized sensors on the car and the driver. This data tells Button's team how well he and his car are performing. This system is called "live telemetry" and it sends data such as the heart rate of the driver and the fuel level in the car.

This same technology is now being implemented in healthcare. Explained the Times Online:

"If we can track the heart rate of an elite athlete, why not also track the heart rate of a patient recovering from a heart attack?

If, for instance, a patient is released from hospital having suffered a heart problem, the McLaren technology can employ wireless sensors the size of sticking plasters that will send, via the internet to the doctor or clinician responsible, a continuous record of the patient's heart rate and electrocardiogram, the graph that monitors the heartbeat."

NASA Technology in Chrysler Cars

Perhaps in a bid to out-do Formula One, Chrysler is tapping into space travel technology!

According to a recent press release from NASA, it is partnering with Chrysler to "use technologies originally developed for human spaceflight to enhance future vehicles and adapt advanced automotive technology for use in space." The two organizations will share information about mobility systems, wireless technologies, robotics, energy storage, radar, materials engineering, and battery systems.

Chrysler said that it plans to use NASA's research in surface navigation sensors for backup warning systems, lane departure warning systems and adaptive cruise control.

GM's Augmented Reality Car

In an article entitled What You'll See In The Future, AOL Auto looks at the latest advances in car cameras and sensors. Side-view cameras, currently available on some up-market vehicles, can be used to assist parking and as "advanced systems that help spot vehicles in your blindspots." Sensors on the side of the car are also used for lane departure warning systems, which "monitor lane lines and alert a driver when he or she inadvertently crosses those lines."

Another use for external cameras and sensors, writes AOL Auto's Frank Filipponio, is forward vision enhancement. Last month ReadWriteWeb wrote about a new General Motors technology that will bring AR to car windshields and provide a heads-up-display (HUD) experience. Here's a video showcasing this "enhanced vision system" of General Motors:

Ford's Voice Controlled Car

Last week we reported on the latest update to Ford's Sync system, a voice-controlled connectivity system. Sync allows drivers to use voice commands to do things like place a call or control their music playlists.

With Sync AppLink, Ford introduced a new platform that allows developers to offer voice controls for their mobile apps on Sync-enabled cars. The first Sync-enabled applications, which will be available later this year, are Pandora, Stitcher, and Orangatame's OpenBreak Twitter app. The first car to feature this new service will be the 2011 Ford Fiesta.

Opposite End of Car Spectrum: The Alhambra

To show that even cheaper models of cars are getting sensor technology, let's look at the latest model of the Alhambra – a Spanish MPV car (Multi-Purpose Vehicle). The Alhambra was described by British car guide Whatcar? as "cheap to buy, comfy for seven and good to drive."

The latest model comes with "bi-xenon headlamps with adaptive control and full beam assistant." This works via a sensor, which "detects oncoming vehicles and automatically dips the beam."

Another new feature is "the park/steer assistant, which autonomously manoeuvres the Alhambra into tight parking spaces – even perpendicular to the direction of travel."

While the Alhambra may sound humble compared to Formula One's sensor technology, or Chrysler's deal with NASA, it shows that even the most basic of cars is using sensors – which will inexorably lead to an Internet of Things.

Let us know in the comments what you're driving and if it uses sensor technology.

Research for this article was contributed by Deane Rimerman.

He plays uptight Park Avenue resident Pete Campbell on 'Mad Men,' but actor Vincent Kartheiser is decidedly less materialistic than his alter ego.

In an interview with the UK Observer, Kartheiser, who resides in LA, says he no longer has a car (he takes the bus or walks) and lives in a home with no toilet.

He claims to use his neighbor's.

“I don't have a toilet at the moment. My house is just a wooden box. I mean I am planning to get a toilet at some point. But for now I have to go to the neighbours. I threw it all out.”

(As he says this, I'm wondering whether this is just another of the parts Kartheiser might be trying on for size, but to prove the point he later takes me back to his house, which really is an empty wooden box, a small one-room bungalow on a nondescript Hollywood street and indeed it has no lavatory.) Is that a Buddhist thing, I wonder, or an early midlife crisis thing?

“It started a couple of years ago,” he says. “It was in response to going to these Golden Globe type events and they just give you stuff. You don't want it. You don't use it. And then Mad Men started to become a success on a popular level and people started sending me stuff, just boxes of shit. Gifts for every holiday, clothes. One day, I looked around and thought 'I don't want this stuff, I didn't ask for it'. So I started giving it to friends or charity stores, or if it is still in its box I might sell it for a hundred bucks. I liked it so I didn't stop.”

But he admits he does own a bed.

Fortunately, with Season 4 of 'Mad Men' about to film (it starts airing in July), he will have somewhere to use a toilet for the next several months.
